The Essentials: Visa requirements

Every country has its own parameters and criteria for providing visa (either student or working) to immigrants. In India, this process is different for different countries. The basics of it are, however, that each student visa provided to international students is a multiple-entry visa, to facilitate such students to visit home for holidays and be back again to rejoin the next semester.

For the visa application of international students to get accepted, a letter of approval is required from the respective Indian college or university where they have been accepted to study. This student visa will only remain valid for those specific number of years of study in India. However, a provisional visa is granted to international students for a period of 3 months during which they can seek admission at different universities in India. Finally, international students also need to submit proof of financial status to have their student visas accepted.

Eligibility and admission process

  • International students need to have completed 12 years of schooling to be eligible to begin their admission process in an Indian university/college. This starts by submitting their mark sheet for 10+2 (only for students who studied in Indian schools) to the Student Cell, Ministry of External Affairs at New Delhi.

  • Next, international students need to approach private universities in India for admission since there is no facility of direct admission of international students at government-run universities. Nevertheless, students with African, Latin American, and Asian ethnicities can avail certain quotas reserved in BDS and MBBS courses.

  • International students, however, do not need to sit for the same entrance examinations that Indian students have to appear for when applying to enroll in private colleges and universities in India.

  • Finally, international students who wish to pursue their postgraduate courses from an Indian university, need to have a valid graduation degree that is equivalent to a typical 3 to 4 years of graduation degree in India.
